6 Steps to Spring Cleaning
Spring is the season for fresh air and refreshed homes! At The Village of Zephyrhills, an RV/mobile home park for seniors and military veterans 55+, we believe that a clean environment promotes a healthier and happier community. While our property maintenance team works on the exterior spaces in our community, we are here with tips to help you keep the inside of your unit tidy. Just follow these six simple steps, and your place will be fresh from top to bottom!
1. Clean away the clutter
Start your spring cleaning by getting rid of any clutter that’s clogging up your unit! Move from room to room, throwing away any trash and organizing as you go. We recommend sorting into three categories – keep, remove, or donate. Make sure that any items in the donation pile are in very good shape!
Cleaning up the clutter also means making sure that no exits in your unit are blocked by either furniture or personal items. In the event of an emergency, you need to have clear access to all doors and windows!
2. Start at the top
Once your space is organized, it’s time to grab your cleaning supplies! Start at the ceiling and work your way to the floor, since dust will naturally fall down! Wipe down the doors, window frames, ceiling fans, blinds, and lights, removing any dust or cobwebs. If you have curtains or throw rugs, take them outside for a good shake! Then, clean your walls from top to bottom and dust all other surfaces.
Extra Tip: Spring in Florida means higher levels of pollen, but using your air conditioning can help filter the air and reduce your allergy symptoms. Just make sure to change your air filters regularly!
3. Hit the floors
Now, it’s time to turn your attention to your floor! Sweep and vacuum them to remove any dirt. If you have solid floors, grab a damp mop and a floor-appropriate cleaner to remove any remaining grime. Don’t forget to wipe down your baseboards, too!
4. Deep clean the kitchen
Wash all dishes, and make sure to wash the sink, too! If you have a microwave, wipe the inside with a damp cloth or paper towel to remove any stuck-on foods. After making sure the heat is off and the stove is cool, you can wash your stovetop with a non-abrasive sponge and dish soap. Then give your fridge a wipe-down – inside and out! Finally, scrub away any built-up grease or food residue from your cabinets, countertops, and drawers.
5. Make your bathroom sparkle
A dirty bathroom is a smelly one, and no one wants that! The first area to tackle is the toilet. First, clean the inside of the bowl with toilet cleaner and a toilet brush. Then, clean the entire outside, the handle, and the toilet seat. Now, move over to your tub, shower, and sink, spraying with an all-purpose cleaner and wiping all of the grime away!
6. Don’t forget your porch or patio
Once the inside of your unit is clean and tidy, it’s time to head outdoors. Remove any clutter outside, sweep your porch or patio, and clean off your outdoor furniture. Shake out your welcome mat and wipe down your door to make your space inviting!
If you are a Section 8 / Housing Choice Voucher holder, keeping a clean space is essential! Every year, your unit will undergo a separate inspection to make sure that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Housing Quality Standards are met.
It’s important to note that, if your unit fails just one item on the Section 8 inspection checklist, then you will fail the entire inspection. That means, one blocked window or one cluttered space can cause a real issue! After the inspection, the property manager will be given a list of all items that have failed and why, so they can be remedied.
But you won’t have to worry about this if you maintain a clean and orderly home! If it feels too overwhelming, break down your chores into just a few each day – like doing the dishes, wiping down countertops, and doing a quick pick-up!
